Congratulations to Paul Glynn and his Green Briar charges for winning the Twilight Summer League 030/40 2012. Paul was instrumental in setting up the team, coordinating fixtures and managing from the pitch and sideline. With all the other work Paul does we have an early nominee for Clubman of the year.
The match itself was decided on penalty kicks as a 90 minute 1-1 stalemate was played out at Woburn High School. The standard of play from the Green Briar and MPS was worthy of a final and 90 minutes couldn't separate the teams.
After an earlier miss from Michael Graham, MPS took the lead from the spot. Colin Goin mis-timed a challenge in the box and Jason Sullo was unlucky not to save, getting two hands on the ball but pushing it into the side netting.
Immediately from the restart, Hairstyle dropped a 5 yard pass to Davey Coen who hit the ball 1st time all of 55 yards and into the net, as he caught the MPS goalkeeper napping. The ball was hit with such authority that the keeper was left scrambling goal ward and ended up in a heap in the net himself. Goal of the season contender.
The second half was an end-to-end affair with many half chances created but nothing clear cut. That is, until Brian McGuinness put a superb ball onto the "ceann" of Hairstyle only for his header to fly over.
So onto PK's. The Briar were flawless with their 4 takers, McGuinness, Coen, O'Connor and Janak Altidore with the winner. The cause was helped with a great save, low to his left from captain Jason Sullo, while the other MPS kick that was missed cannoned off the bottom of Sullo's right hand post.
Once again, great work from the team and Paul Glynn.
