Briar crash out to holders in the MSSL Cup

Boston Olympiakos 3:1 Green Briar FC

Having taken the lead early in the second half from a Brian McGuinness penalty kick, the Briar were unable to hang on and bowed out of the 2012 installment of the MSSL Cup.

In fairness, the Briar were out-played for much of the first half but managed to keep their goal in tact while also crafting two excellent chances on the counter attack. Ronan Caldwell was unable to capitalize on shooting opportunites at the beginning and end of the first half with the Olympiakos keeper saving well on both occasions.

Five minutes into the second half Tom Caldwell was up-ended in the box for the spot kick. Brian McGuinness converted well and the Briar has something to hang onto.

As the half progressed the Briar sat back more and more, inviting pressure from their dangerous opponents. From a free kick on the edge of the box Olympiakos danger man Admilson Miranda produced a bit of magic, sending the ball perfectly over the wall and into the net off the angle of crossbar and post. An excellent strike.

Miranda proved to be the Briar killer yet again as he netted the go-ahead goal. Following a run from midfield that was not closed down with sufficient urgency, too much respect and space was shown to the Olympiakos man as the defenders continued to back off. Having found himself inside the box, a clinical side foot shot to the corner capped off a terrific run. Even though Miranda exploited the opportunity afforded him, the Briar should do better in coming to meet runners from midfield.

While pushing for the equalizer, Olympiakos put the game out of reach when John Bavota squared to an unmarked Queivon Correia Adilson at the back post who made no mistake.

A disappointing performance and result as the Briar know they can play better. With Olympiakos up once again in the league this Sunday a quick turn around in fortunes will be sought by everyone in a white jersey.

Line-Up: Dupuis, Roux, Miller, Hennessy, Clarke, Treacy, T Caldwell, O'Malley, McGuinness, Coen, R Caldwell, Samati, McLoughlin, Jones, Altidore
