Green Briar 0:1 Paddy Barry's
The Green Briar fell at the first hurdle in their defense of the Banshee Celtic Invitational Cup, losing by a solitary goal to Paddy Barry's at Moakley Stadium on a showery Wednesday evening.
The Briar were unlucky to remain scoreless on the night. Ronan Caldwell hit the woodwork early on and with almost his first touch Dean Burke was robbed of an opener as he lobbed the keeper from distance only to see it hit the upright.
The chances continued to be created in the second half. Braima Samati whistled a shot wide from his right wing position. Later, Davey Coen hit over from 15 yards out after being setup from the bi-line by Dean Burke.
Paddy Barry's broke the deadlock when a sweeping move from the right caught the Briar defense a little unbalanced. The attacker turned the corner onto his left foot at the left edge of the box and sent a strong shot towards goal. Although the shot was in a central location and Ken Mullane in goal seemed set to gobble it up, it somehow squirted through the five hole and a second attacker crashing the net finished the gifted chance.
The Briar responded with plenty of pressure on the Barry's goal. Late on Ronan Caldwell sent a glancing header just wide of the post following an inswinger from Conor Treacy. The final chance fell to Ronan again. Picking the ball up at the right hand side of the area, from a tight angle Caldwell screwed his shot wide off the outside of his right boot when perhaps a low shot across the keeper could have led to something more promising.
Little to cheer about for the Briar in this one as a consolation match versus Banshee Celtic awaits on Saturday. In fairness, the team has one eye on the big match versus Albania United on Sunday as the second half of the MSSL league kicks off at the same venue.
